On January 1, 2004, a New Year and a new day several friends spoke on the beach after a wonderful surf session. It was a crazy weather day for the first day of a new year with temperatures in the high 70's. One of the surfers said, "Mary, we need you to put on a surfing contest for the longboarders here on our turf". I agreed and the vision for the Steel Pier Classic was born. A dear friend who was with us "Zeke Saunders" said he would help in the planning. In order to begin preparations for putting on a contest we needed to form a club, we were longboarders, so Zeke came up with the Virginia Longboard Federation (VLF). Doing this enable us to handle the administrative aspects of this event. Many contests focus on one aspect of surfing. We created a longboard only contest and after the first year we realized something was missing. We added shortboarding that next year along with SUP, lay down paddle boarding, tandem, team competition and pro shortboard and longboard. A Waterman's Event was born!!
Our mission is to give back to the community by bringing the community together as one. Any proceeds raised are given to Charity. Everyone in our newly formed club works strictly on a volunteer basis, no salaries, no paychecks, just a love for surfing and the ocean. The love of the "Ocean" is our common denominator. Our vision realizes that surfing is an art (no matter what the medium is…a surfboard or a pen and piece of paper) and we must include all budding artists to share their interpretation of the ocean. Our little get together in the parking lot that January day turned into something huge that makes everyone feel important. We all have different interests and different drives, but one thing is truly in common amongst us all... THE LOVE OF THE WATER AND THE OCEAN! Each year we celebrate this love and the birth of the art of surfing at the Steel Pier Classic and Surf Art Expo.
The watersports we feature during our one of kind East Coast Event are treated equal. We provide the same divisions for shortboarding and longboarding, the same values of the cash purse. All participants are entering an event that does not discriminate against their personal love of surfing. We embrace it ALL!
In taking this event to a higher level came the addition of the Surf Art Expo and the Student Art Show. It began with the gifted artists at Princess Anne High School. Budding Student Artists created surfing themed artwork for display and sale in a gallery on the beach provided by the VLF. It has grown to include many Virginia Beach High Schools and three years ago expanded to the adult surfing themed art show on the boardwalk. Today the VLF is an official "Partner in Education" with the City of Virginia Beach.
A dream and a vision is now the premier waterman's festival on the East Coast.
